FEATURING GUEST SPEAKER – ROXANNA HARLOW: YOUR LIBERATION IS BOUND UP IN MINE
Social justice work can be overwhelming to the point of paralysis. It’s particularly so when we’re engaging as allies: “How can I help? What do they need? What should I learn? Who can I talk to?” In this service, we suggest that these are not the first questions allies should be asking if we want to address inequity and disrupt oppressive systems. A different orientation to social justice work is necessary to move from helper to healer.
Dr. Roxanna Harlow is a Chicago native, activist, and sociology professor at Carroll Community College where she serves as the Discipline Coordinator of Sociology and the Faculty Coordinator of Diversity Training and Development. An expert in the areas of race, gender, and social inequality, she has a passion for community and social justice. Before her work at Carroll, Roxanna was a faculty member at McDaniel College for nine years. She then left to start Higher Learning, Inc., a non-profit organization that, from 2009-2017, provided mostly low-income youth with out-of-school-time learning experiences including travel abroad. Active in the community, Roxanna serves on the board of two local non-profit organizations and is a member of the Carroll County Board of Education’s Education that is Multicultural Council.
